DIA launches a Community Collection for food on its online store

The company will turn donations from its customers into essential food items for the Food Banks of Spain, in response to the food crisis caused by the current pandemic.

From Monday, 19 October to 19 December, DIA customers will be able to make donations to the food collection through the dia.es website.

This initiative is part of the DIAContribuye2020 programme.

Madrid, 19 October 2020. From today until 19 December, more than 26 million Spanish households will have the chance to help the country’s most vulnerable groups of people with the click of a button, through the dia.es online store. DIA will turn customer donations into essential food items to be distributed to the Food Banks of Spain.

For a third consecutive year, the company has opted to reinforce the traditional Great Food Collection organised by the Federación Española de Bancos de Alimentos de España (FESBAL, [Spanish Federation for Food Banks in Spain]) that takes place in physical stores, with an online collection. This year, the Great Food Collection will take place from the 16 to 22 November. This time round, the online collection will remain active on dia.es for two months, with the aim of responding to the food crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

To contribute to the collection, all DIA customers need to do is add a 1, 5 or 10 euro donation to their shopping basket, which they can find in the website’s “Soy Solidario” product catalogue. Alternatively, there will be an option to make a donation before paying.

So far this year, the Spanish Food Banks have distributed more than 144 million kilos of food to a million beneficiaries and more than 7,000 charitable organisations. Requests by vulnerable groups for essential food items from charitable organisations have increased by 40% since the start of the pandemic.

DIA’s online collection is part of the DIAContribuye2020 plan, and was launched in March of this year by the company in response to the crisis caused by COVID-19. It aims to mitigate the pandemic’s consequences among the most vulnerable members of society. This project has already seen the company donate more than 110,000 kilos of food to food banks across various parts of Spain.
