On the journey towards a more sustainable future, every day matters. This is why Grupo Dia has launched its 2024-25 Strategic Sustainability Plan, focused on four key areas of action and eight commitments aligned with the SDGs, in order to address the company’s priority challenges: the development of the proximity economy; promoting a diverse and inclusive culture; caring for the natural environment; and driving a more sustainable value chain.
Proximity Economy
HEALTHY FOOD ACCESSIBLE TO ALL AND PROMOTING EMPLOYMENT AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP
The first pillar of the Sustainability Plan brings together three commitments that have a significant impact on the communities where Grupo Dia operates, through its network of own stores and franchises globally.
With the commitment to facilitating access to healthy, quality food, the company will continue implementing its “Eating Better Every Day” programme. Additionally, Grupo Dia is advancing its commitment to fostering entrepreneurship and employment through its ecosystem of franchisees and local suppliers, as well as promoting a positive social impact through partnerships and initiatives that we support locally with various associations and NGOs.
Promoting a Diverse and Inclusive Culture
A DIVERSE TEAM, FREE FROM LABELS
The second strategic pillar focuses on promoting a diverse and inclusive culture, with its commitments and actions being prioritized internally within the company through promotional campaigns, work-life balance measures, and training activities aimed at the development and professional growth of its team.
Caring for Our Natural Environment
ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY AND SUSTAINABLE RAW MATERIALS
The third strategic pillar focuses on caring for the natural environment, with three commitments that address the analysis of the business’s decarbonisation process and its supply chain; increasing the recyclability of packaging and promoting a circular economy; and continuing to reduce food waste through prevention and food redistribution strategies.
Although, due to their location, our direct activities do not have a significant negative impact on biodiversity, the Group’s sourcing policies may have an indirect effect on biodiversity and the normal functioning of ecosystems. This is particularly true in relation to deforestation, sustainable fishing, or animal welfare, issues that the Group has decided to address through the Strategic Sustainability Plan, aiming to better understand the situation with two objectives: to support best practices in each field through certification programmes and to reduce potential risks associated with the use of raw materials.
COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE FISHING
Sustainable fishing ensures the continuity of marine species. Aware of how important this is for natural resources and for our customers, we work to offer a wide range of products that promote the conservation of the oceans and their resources. Thanks to the support of our strategic partner, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), we have made significant progress in this area over the past three years, increasing our own-brand products from 7 to 36 references with the renowned MSC blue label.
This effort has earned Dia España the “Forever Oceans” award in the “Best Newcomer” category in 2021 and the “Communication in Sustainable Fishing” category in 2022.
Furthermore, we collaborate with the NGO Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) to characterise information regarding the fishing grounds from which our seafood products originate, with the aim of defining a sourcing policy and promoting, as supply chain participants, a more sustainable seafood market.
COMMITMENT TO ANIMAL WELFARE
As part of Dia’s commitment to animal welfare, all meat, egg, and dairy suppliers that we work with are certified in animal welfare by internationally recognised standards.
In 2023, the company publicly joined the European Chicken Commitment, pledging to implement its welfare standards in chicken farming for meat production by the end of 2026.
Moreover, as part of our Sustainability strategy, Dia is committed to selling only cage-free eggs by 2028. This commitment will be realised in Spain by the end of 2025.
To fulfil this commitment, we are working closely with our suppliers in all the regions where we operate. In Spain, 58% of our available own-brand and national brand references come from cage-free systems (50% of our own-brand and 75% of national brand).
In parallel to this work, Dia has taken an additional step by committing to promoting the use of cage-free eggs as an ingredient in food products, supporting our own-brand suppliers in prioritising them in their recipes. The company aims to achieve this commitment by the end of 2028.
Dia will work alongside its suppliers and other stakeholders to ensure that the requirements of the Commitment are applied to fresh, frozen, and processed products containing more than 50% chicken as an ingredient, sold under its own brand in Spain. In the process of raising animal welfare standards, it will be necessary for other players to also adhere to the Commitment.
COMMITMENT TO FIGHTING DEFORESTATION
We have initiated a due diligence process on four key raw materials (palm oil, soya, beef, and paper) to gain a better understanding of the supply chain and identify potential negative impacts to work towards their mitigation. In areas where we lack sufficient information or influence to address complex and structural issues, we will work with third parties to drive transformation that tackles the root causes of these social challenges.
Currently, on a global level, 100% of our own-brand products using paper come from non-risk countries or are certified, and around 85% in the case of beef, palm oil, and soya products.
Driving a More Sustainable Value Chain
TOWARDS A RESPONSIBLE MANAGEMENT MODEL
Lastly, through the fourth pillar of the 2024-25 Sustainability Plan, Grupo Dia will work towards driving its value chain towards a sustainable management model based on responsible production standards. This is the way to ensure that decisions are agile, consistent, and secure, thereby meeting the expectations placed upon us.

Sustainability Reports
In 2021, we updated our Sustainability Policy, setting out a clear roadmap: to create value from our distinctive strength, proximity. This Policy came to life in the first Sustainability Plan 2021-2023, an instrument aligned with the SDGs, which outlines the commitments, actions, and performance indicators for the key areas of Grupo Dia’s business.
2023Report
Grupo Dia concludes the implementation of its first Sustainability Plan, having achieved a general improvement in the level of satisfaction among its key stakeholders: customers, employees, suppliers, and franchisees. Aligned with its purpose, the company updates its roadmap to successfully tackle the challenges of building a sustainable future, with a particular focus on the development of the proximity economy and the promotion of a diverse and inclusive culture.

In the second year of executing the 2021-23 Sustainability Plan, a general improvement in the level of satisfaction among customers, employees, suppliers, and franchisees has been achieved. Working on the five strategic pillars defined by the plan (customers, employees and community, franchisees and suppliers, the environment, and governance), Dia has made progress in transforming its business, guided by the strategy of proximity.
2021Report
In the first year of executing the 2021-23 Sustainability Plan, we achieved a general improvement in the level of satisfaction among our customers, employees, suppliers, and franchisees. This result was obtained after analysing the satisfaction levels of these groups, a priority set for the first year of the Plan’s execution, laying the groundwork for the next period. Furthermore, during the first year of the Plan’s execution, key progress was made in areas such as access to food and basic care, diversity and labour inclusion, and the relationship with franchisees and suppliers.
